Since Israel began its ground offensive in Gaza, Egypt has taken in some wounded Palestinians through the border crossing at Rafah. There have been increasing calls on Egypt to ease the border bottleneck, but Egypt's government has been reluctant to keep the border open while Hamas controls the Gaza Strip. Cairo wants the forces of moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to be in charge of the crossing.
